For us in Norway, freedom of speech and practicing an art you are passionate about is a matter of course. This is not the case for Gato. Yet he chooses, as he himself says,  dance 100 out of 100 times.

Through the documentary “Bboy For Life” and dance, we get to know Gato and his conditions as a dancer in Guatemala. The contrast between winning the Hedda Prize and the Critics’ Prize in Norway, and subsequent death threats in his home country could not have been greater. M13 – often referred to as one of the world’s most dangerous gangs – threatens Gato’s life … Because he’s a dancer.

As a skilled dancer, he has through the hip-hop culture made his way out of the favela. He is considered a threat that can recruit “future soldiers” – children – out of the gang environments by dancing .
