The fairy tale “The Ugly Duckling” is about a duckling who enters the world and experiences rejection. On his first day in the duck farm, he is mocked by the other animals because he looks different. He is ugly, big and ugly, and the animals on the farm refuse to accept him. They push, hit, bully him until his own mother turn on him.
One day the ugly duckling is overwhelmed and decides to escape. Alone in the world, he faces many challenges, but when winter turns to spring, the ugly duckling discovers that he is actually a beautiful swan, and that in a flock of swans that he belongs.
And there he will finally be accepted for who he truly is.
H.C. Andersen wrote the fairy tale “The Ugly Duckling” in November 1842 and it is still as relevant today. It can be read in many different ways; excluded in a community for sexual or racial reasons, having a disability or simply for just being different, and therefore have to fight to be accepted.
