With the Barbie figure as a symbol, Plastic Fantastic challenges how the idea of perfection and ideals, and expectations and conventions around e.g. gender and sexuality affect us, and how our room for action is restricted based on the construction of “right” and “wrong”.

The performance is a portrait of a human being, a body that never quite does the right thing or fits in. How do you find yourself in a mainstream world where you constantly encounter preconceived ideas and thoughts about who you should be?

The room is filled with obscenity and inappropriate behavior. Jonathan recklessly throws himself into something real, something strange and something very questionable, where questions of freedom and liberation circulate. Boundaries and norms are stretched and bent to find out – where is the limit for how different it is “allowed” to be?

Plastic Fantastic is an interactive solo dance performance for grades 10 and up. Created in collaboration between dance artists Jonathan Ibsen and Caroline Wahlström Nesse and Marius Kjos at Rom For Dans.

Jonathan himself has had a desire to create the performance he wishes he himself had seen as a 16-year-old. He says: “By showing a human being in constant search for belonging and understanding, the aim is to expose the vulnerability of feeling like you don’t fit in. That I, together with the young people, can get to a place where we dare to talk about what we can’t quite grasp or understand, and maybe find a community in that feeling “wrong”, different and far from perfect.”

The performance lasts 1 hour.
